Phulia Krittibas

"The Hallowed Ground Where the Bengali Ramayana Was Born."

The Krittibas Memorial in Fulia is a site of immense historical and cultural significance, standing as a tribute to Krittibas Ojha, the 15th-century poet who brought the epic Ramayana to the common people of Bengal. Before his translation (known as the Sri Ram Panchali or Krittibasi Ramayan), the epic was confined to Sanskrit, inaccessible to the masses.

The memorial complex is beautifully maintained, offering a peaceful environment for history buffs and literature enthusiasts. It features the poet’s Samadhi (memorial spot), a well-stocked library containing rare manuscripts and books, and a museum showcasing artifacts from the region’s rich history. Throughout the year, especially during the Krittibas Mela, the grounds come alive with literary discussions, poetry recitations, and cultural programs, keeping the legacy of the great poet alive. For anyone visiting the Santipur Block, paying homage here is a journey back to the origins of the Bengali language itself.
